Open Positions

The Cryptography Group at ETH Zurich, led by Prof. Ueli Maurer, has several open positions. We recommend that interested candidates browse the group publications to familiarize themselves with the research done in our group. For more details on the positions and how to apply, see below.

PhD Position

We currently have an open position for a PhD student in the general field of Cryptography. Candidates with an excellent Master's degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field, and with good English skills (written and spoken), are invited to apply.

You can apply by email to Christopher Portmann. Please use the subject "PhD Application". Your mail should contain the following items:

  • Application Letter (usually the mail body, alternatively an attached PDF file)
    This letter must contain the following information:
    • educational details (for each BSc/MSc degree obtained): name and place (country) of university, GPA, and a brief explanation of the grading system (highest grade, lowest passing grade, if available annual class average).
    • list of crypto-related courses: course title (and type), name of the lecturer, achieved grade.
    • list of documents that are missing from the application (see below).
  • CV (attached in PDF format)
    The CV should include personal details (full name, date of birth, nationality, country of residence), educational details, and references.
  • Transcripts (attached in PDF format)
    For each obtained degree, attach a separate PDF file with the transcripts. Please provide translations of transcripts which are not in English/German/French. Please briefly explain the grading system in the mail body (see Application Letter).
  • Master Thesis (attached in PDF format)
    If the Master thesis is written in either English, French, or German, please attach it to the application. If it is in another language, please provide a one page abstract in English.

If some of the transcripts or the thesis are not available yet, please specify this in the application letter. You will be asked to provide them at a later point. If we need further information, we will contact you. Please refrain from sending us zip, rar, doc(x), odt, and similar files.

Post-doc Position

We currently have an open position for a post-doctoral researcher in the general field of Cryptography. Candidates with a PhD degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field, and with excellent Cryptography publications, are invited to apply.

    This letter must contain the following information:
    • list of research positions held so far (including PhD): position, university, supervisor.
    • brief statement of research interests.
  • CV (attached in PDF format)
    The CV should include personal details (full name, date of birth, nationality, country of residence), educational details, research experience, teaching experience, and references.
  • Research interests (attached in PDF format)
    A non-technical exposition of past research and an overview of future research plans.
  • Complete list of publications (attached in PDF format)
  • PhD Thesis (attached in PDF format)
    If the thesis is not finished yet, please specify when it is expected to be finished.
